Our Story

Tim Strange is the Director & Owner of MID.

Tim has engineered some of this country’s biggest powerplants in vessels ranging from 36-feet to 120-feet (11- 37m). His expertise in the field of engine/drivetrain installation is second to none and covers more than 30-years in the marine industry with varying projects worldwide.

Tim Strange was offered an opportunity in the late 80s to join a team of elite engineers to build an Americas Cup racing yacht.

In 1988 KZ1 was launched before a crowd of 130,000 people at the Auckland harbour. Next was Grant Daltons Whitbread Yacht Fisher and Paykel, New Zealand Endeavour and Bruce Farr one Tonners.

Tim’s background stemmed from building race cars as a young man. His precision for detail and eagle eye started his next chapter in high speed power boats and launches.

This included surface drive vessels and all related engineer systems from power steering to hydraulics.

Len Gilbert and John Menzies became part of this adventure in the power boat world of engineering, high speed vessels ranging from 38-120 feet.

Marine Installations and Developments was formed in the early 2000s.

Tims skill to tackle and set up drive lines has taken him all over the world setting up new builds and their propulsion systems.

With New Zealand not having any boat wrecking yards, re powering or refitting your boat becomes a good option for a new lease of life.

This is something MID has been focused on along with supporting the local NZ Boatbuilding Industry with setting up propulsion and driveline systems right through to portable water and air conditioning systems on new custom builds.

Supporting Weber Marine (Gulf Harbour) with the Elite range of custom new builds, Nic DeMey Yachts and their latest DeMey 60.

MID’s passion to deliver the best marine engineering product possible is backed and supported by a dedicated team of Marine Engineers that share Tim’s drive to improve.

MID is very strong in the service side of marine engineering offering our vast fleet of vessels the service maintenance required placing our clients safety at sea first for friends and family to continue enjoying boating.

Combining dynamics of new builds and existing vessels to make more efficient and exceed customer expectations hands down.
